Performance Celebrates Chris’s 20 Year Anniversary

This year marks an incredible milestone for Chris Ihling as he celebrates 20 years with Performance. Over two decades, Chris has grown alongside the company, taking on new challenges, leadership roles, and helping shape the teams and culture that define who we are today. From long nights in the lab to mentoring the next generation of engineers, his journey reflects the perseverance, collaboration, and commitment that have always set Performance apart. In this interview, Chris reflects on his career, the lessons he’s learned, and what this milestone means to him.

What initially attracted you to join Performance, and how has your perception of it evolved over the past 20+ years?

I was initially attracted to working for a small company. I came from large corporations prior and wanted to try something different. My initial interview also helped to convince me this would be a great place to work. I was deciding between two different offers and how comfortable I felt in the interview went a long way in helping me decide to come to Performance.

What roles have you held at Performance?

I initially came in as an Engineer. Over the years, I have been a Team Manager, Program Manager, and now an Engineering Leader.

Reflecting on your journey with us, what are some key milestones or memorable moments that stand out to you?

One milestone that stands out to me is completing the Common Core System program for a major tier-1 supplier. We went through some tough times on that one, with many long hours in the lab in Grand Rapids. I think that some of the most memorable moments and bonds I have created here have been born out of those tough times together.

Can you share some lessons or insights you’ve gained from your experiences here over the past 20+ years?

The number one key to success here is the ability to drive things to completion. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and seek help to complete your tasks. Everyone at Performance is willing to help, and that is one of the best things about our culture.

What aspects of your role do you find most fulfilling?

I enjoy mentoring younger engineers in their transition to leadership. I have had many really talented engineers successfully move into Project Lead roles working with me, and I enjoy seeing them move on to bigger, better things.

What advice would you offer to new employees based on your extensive experience and knowledge of our company?

Get things done! That is my PSW motto. Our customers hire us to get things done for them, and that is exactly what we need to do to be successful.

Looking ahead, what are your aspirations or goals for the future, both professionally and personally?

That is a hard question to answer. As far as professional aspirations and goals, I am not sure. I do sometimes think I would be energized by taking on a new role, just not sure what that role would be. Retirement is also somewhere on the horizon, just not sure how far on the horizon it is. I believe I still have quite a few good years left in me. Step one is getting my kids out of college and on their own…lol.

What does reaching this milestone mean to you, and how do you plan to celebrate this achievement?

It does mean a lot to me to be fulfilled enough to have stuck around for this long. This is the longest I have ever been at one company in my career; I think that says a lot about how I feel about Performance. I’m not sure how I will celebrate, maybe a drink with those who have been here with me the whole time and have gone to battle with me over the years!

Chris’s 20-year journey is a testament not just to his individual dedication, but to the kind of culture that makes people want to build their careers here. His emphasis on driving work to completion, supporting teammates, and developing future leaders continues to leave a lasting impact on Performance and our customers. We’re grateful for his leadership, his candor, and the countless contributions he’s made along the way. Congratulations, Chris, on 20 years—and thank you for everything you’ve brought to the team!
